Etymology: Opposite διπλόος, διπλοῦς `twofold, double' (Il.); late διπλός (Opp.). Connection of ἁπλός with Lat. simplus, Lat. du-plus, Germ. e.g. Goth. twei-fl (acc.) `doubt, Zweifel' is improbable as Gr. -πλος is late and rare. One supposes a root *pel- `fold' for the *-plo-forms, but ἁπλόος is still unexplained. (Kretschmer Glotta 12, 218 thought of sec. influence of -πλόϜος `sailing', to πλέω. Cf. διπλάσιος.
